The Main Street Armory is a multi-purpose arena originally built in 1905 for military use. World War I and World War II soldiers on their way overseas completed final training and processing in the armory and the New York National Guard used it as a training facility until 1990.
When it wasn't in use for military purposes, the 35,000-square-foot main arena hosted circuses, concerts, balls and auto shows. It was the home arena for the Rochester Iroquois indoor lacrosse team in the 1930s. It was also the home of the American Basketball League's Rochester Centrals, the city's first professional basketball team from 1925-31. The Armory also was the home court for the Rochester East High School basketball team.
A local entrepreneur, Scott Donaldson, purchased the 138,000-square-foot, 7-story building, for only $1,000 as there were no other bidders. The arena was in a great state of disrepair, but Mr. Donaldson invested thousands of dollars to repair and refurbish this historic building and has brought it back to it's grandeur as a major event venue. The Armory is now the home venue for Next Era Wrestling (N.E.W.) and has been hosting their events since 2007. The Main Street Armory Rochester which now seats 5,000 also hosts major concerts and festivals.
A large portion of the building has been converted into office space, and is filling quickly with local businesses. And there is a great restaurant, Stars and Stripes Grill, featuring Italian American cuisine, steak, seafood and more.
