Seneca Park Zoo was first opened in 1893 with several species of deer and an outdoor aviary next to a trout pond. In 1931 the main zoo building was completed and housed a variety of exotic animals including Jimmy the Chimp, who lived to be 55 at the zoo, and was the oldest chimp in captivity at that time. Future improvements came in 1970 when the polar bear grotto was opened for the zoo’s two polar bears, Pennies and Nickels; in 1993 the Genesee Trail and Discovery Center was opened; and in 1997 the Rocky Coasts exhibit opened and provides visitors to see the polar bears and sea lions under water. The zoo works continuously to improve the natural habitat facilities for its residents!
