The Greater Rochester International Airport’s first passenger flight was to New York in 1927. During the 1940’s the airport was the scene of great activity with increased flight schedule and expansion of the civilian pilot training. There was also a cadet flight school which at one time numbered 1,000 students. The Greater Rochester International Airport was taken over by the County of Monroe in 1948 and major improvements to the airport including lengthening of runways and construction of the administration building have been completed.
GRIA is currently served by American, AirTran, Continental, Delta, jetBlue, Northwest, United, and US Airways as well as regional partners and smaller airlines. Although airline service is dynamic, the airport has typically provided about 150 flights per day to 19 cities and serves more than 2.5 million passengers annually.
