The arena facilities have a grand history. It was originally built as the Kimbal Tobacco Factory with a 21-foot statue of the Roman God of Commerce, Mercury at its entrance.  After changing hands, the property was donated to the University of Rochester and ultimately the City of Rochester and it was decided to construct a facility including an auditorium, sports arena, physical recreation facilities, meeting rooms, and display rooms, among other things. The Rochester Community War Memorial opened its doors in 1955. A major renovation and expansion was completed between 1996 and 1998 and the arena was renamed the Blue Cross Arena.

The Blue Cross Arena hosts the Rochester Nighthawks, Rochester Razor Sharks and the Americans sport teams and the Rochester area's exciting concert and ice show events.
